Factors in Resonance, Activation, and Cultivation

As summarized by Ruben and Stewart (2020), three fundamental processes influence perception and information-processing: selection, interpretation, and retention, each of which is foundational to our understanding of the dynamics of resonance, activation, and cultivation. At every moment we are surrounded by persons, objects, and circumstances that are potential sources of messages that vie for our attention. Predictably, we attend to some of the inputs and ignore others. Often, the selection decisions we make are unconscious. Equally important are choices – which often take place without conscious attention – regarding how to interpret those messages to which we attend, and a range of decisions about which to retain in memory and use in the future, and which not. Within these three categories are a number of underlying factors and filters that shape the ways in which resonance and activation may occur, several of which are listed and discussed below.
